West Nautical Acquires Tyneside Marine Specialist Out Of Liquidation

A Tyneside marine equipment specialist is poised to reopen under a new name after being bought out of liquidation.

Storrar Marine was originally launched more than 50 years ago as a sail loft in North Shields. In 1985, the business moved to the Coast Road when it expanded to include chandlery, to sell supplies for boats and ships. The business, which had also operated a website for 14 years to reach a wider audience, went into liquidation at the start of the year after it fell victim to soaring costs.

The company announced the firm’s closure on social media In January, highlighting “a combination of the Covid lockdowns and the financial crisis” for making it impossible to continue trading.

The business is set to be relaunched this week as Marine Chandlery, at its new Marine Chandlery headquarters at Tyne Tunnel Trading Estate.

West Nautical director Geoff Moore, who started the company in 2014 after a career at sea on commercial ships and superyachts, said Marine Chandlery will offer a blend of in-person services and enhanced digital accessibility, catering to the diverse needs of boat owners across the region and further afield.

A spokesman for West Nautical said: “The team have ambitions of streamlining and modernising the services to ensure the company continues to meet and exceed expectations of boat owners across the region as well as revitalising the local maritime community.

“The company aspires to be the leading service provider in both inboard and outboard boats along with trailer servicing, continuing to uphold the fantastic reputation set by Storrar Marine under the previous ownership. Effective customer service and support will be at the forefront of their operation to ensure the needs of patrons within the local community continue to be met.

“The team could not be more excited about the business’s grand re-opening on the weekend of June 8 and 9.”
