A proposal to construct hundreds of new homes in Salford has moved forward. The green light was given by Salford council in March for the construction of a new estate with 274 homes on land at Robert Hall Street and West Park Street in Ordsall.
Over 40 percent of the development, comprising houses and flats, will be categorised as affordable housing – priced below market rates. The scheme’s objective is to transform an empty plot of land into a new neighbourhood with ‘tree lined’ streets, green spaces, and foster a sense of community.
However, the plans hit a snag when it was discovered that the land, owned by Salford council, was still reserved for use by the town hall’s children’s services department, as well as planning teams. This issue was resolved at a council meeting this week when it was agreed to transfer the site for residential development, allowing the plans to proceed.
Upon completion, the homes will be managed by Dérive, a development company owned by Salford City Council. New houses on the site will be terraced to blend in with the character of the area, each with a private garden.
These will include two, three, and four-bedroom homes to cater to a variety of people and families. The land was previously home to Ordsall District Centre and St Clement’s Egerton C of E School, but their closures left it vacant for several years, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Coun John Warmisham expressed his support for the development plan approved in March, stating: “If you look at that area it has been gentrified, and I know there are families there who can’t afford to live there, so to see something like this has got to be welcome and I fully support it.”
