Bury’s Former Police Station Site To Be Transformed Into Two Care Homes, Creating 100 Jobs

Work is set to commence before the year’s end on transforming Bury’s former police station site into two large care homes. The Irwell Street site, adjacent to the Castle Leisure centre, has been vacant and overgrown since the multi-storey police station was demolished in 2018.

Bury’s planning committee has given the green light to Exemplar Healthcare’s plans to construct two care homes that will accommodate up to 80 residents with complex needs. It is anticipated that around 100 people will be employed at the facility once the homes are completed.

A design and access report supporting the plans stated: “Nurse-led teams are trained to support adults living with complex mental health needs, dementia, neuro-disabilities including brain injuries, Huntington’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, and physical disabilities including cerebral palsy, spinal injuries and musculoskeletal disorders.”

The report further added: “They also have a number of services that are registered to support adults living with severe or profound and multiple learning disabilities or autism spectrum disorder. Exemplar supports adults of all ages. Most are of working age, only a third are over the age of 65.”

Exemplar operates over 50 care homes nationwide. The site will be divided into two land parcels, with the northern parcel near Lower Bank Street now having full planning permission and work expected to begin before the year ends, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The southern parcel towards Jubilee Way has received outline permission and will be developed at a later stage.

Each package will include a care home with amenity space, access, parking and landscaping. The planning committee this week gave unanimous approval to the plans.
