BAE Systems To Fund Key Careers Work In East Yorkshire

BAE Systems has collaborated with Hull and East Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership to help young people on their career paths.

The defence giant, which has a significant operation on the Humber Bank, is to fund an enterprise co-ordinator to work with 15 schools in the region, for the next three years.

It is a role that sits at the heart of a local network to help schools and colleges improve their careers and enterprise programmes and to engage with the world of work. They provide a route to engage young people and educate them about the paths and roles available in future careers, including STEM.

James Hardstaff, site lead for BAE Systems at Brough said: “We’re delighted to be able to support the HEYLEP and the region’s young people. BAE Systems is committed to providing opportunities for young people through our fantastic apprenticeship and graduate programmes. Collaborating with the LEP on this activity will ensure young people have help understanding the meaningful careers they can have, which ultimately delivers a benefit to the local community.”

Mr Hardstaff has also joined HEYLEP’s Employment & Skills Board, providing further perspective from a major employer. The team at Brough also recently participated in a We Discover Careers Conversations project, alongside other businesses in the region, and in Leicestershire.

A spokesperson for HEYLEP said: “BAE Systems are investing in the future of the young people in Hull and the East Riding; this is a huge asset to the region. Their commitment, sharing of knowledge, support and advice has been invaluable as the HEY Careers Hub goes from strength to strength, enabling our young people to consider rewarding and productive careers to support the local economy.

“This significant engagement of a key regional employer has enabled our future workforce to make informed decisions that will maximise individual potential and talent. We look forward to further developing our relationship together as partners over the coming years.”

At the start of the year BAE Systems created 50 junior roles as part of a recruitment drive for 100 new employees in Brough, as it built capacity to serve next generation demands of the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.
