Aston University Acquires Council Office Building

A Birmingham university has expanded its property portfolio with the acquisition of an award-winning city council building.

Aston University has bought 10 Woodcock Street which sits next to its campus in the city centre.

The building will accommodate several of the university’s schools, including business, law and science, and its new healthcare hub and business incubator initiatives.

The healthcare hub will offer preventative health and wellbeing services and showcase the latest advancements in digital healthcare technology, serving both university staff and students and the wider community.

The new home of Aston Business School will include the CEO Academy and Executive Education Lounge as well as business simulation labs.

Other facilities include a new restaurant, several social spaces and areas for study and group work.

Originally opened by Birmingham City Council in 2011 as the second-largest, purpose-built office building in Birmingham, 10 Woodcock Street was designed by Associated Architects and spans 86,110 sq ft.

At one stage, it was home to more than 3,000 council employees and took home several industry awards including from the British Council for Offices.

Aston University’s vice-chancellor and chief executive Aleks Subic said: “The purchase of 10 Woodcock Street represents a significant milestone in Aston University’s development.

“This move aligns with our vision to drive innovation, support business growth and deliver impactful research and education that transform lives and drive inclusive growth.”

Terms of the purchase were not disclosed.
